The Angling Trust broke the news on their website.
The Angling Trust are pleased to announce the England call up of Callum Dicks who will be joining the Drennan Team England squad for the FIPSed Nations World Championship in Croatia on 13th and 14th September 2014. Joining Callum is; Will Raison, Alan Scotthorne, Sean Ashby, Des Shipp and Steve Hemmingray and (Joint Managers) Mark Downes and Mark Addy.

Mark Downes said of the selection of Callum “Callum has done brilliantly this week in the European Championship in Belgium. He works hard at his sport and despite his age shows an amazing amount of confidence, technical ability and water craft. I have watched Callum develop in recent seasons since leaving the Under 23s International scene, and I am confident he is the first of a new generation of top class youngsters who are emerging onto the "International" match scene who will make up the England team for years to come. Already well travelled with podium places in Italy, France and Belgium, he is a great all-rounder and I am sure he will be an asset to the team especially by keeping the old hands on their toes.”

It is a big deep typical Belgium canal, the average width is about 100m and approx 5m deep, its gin clear with concrete sloping banks on both sides which go out about 20m on each side.

Sadly, this canal is typical of a lot of waters that have been ravaged by Cormorants, in that all you can catch is immature fish, perch or bullheads, or fish too big for the cormorants to eat, in this case bream between 1 and 3kgs. All the roach and skimmers had been eaten.

The pole was a waste of time as you were fishing on a smooth concrete bottom and the water was gin clear with a bright sun, all that could be caught was tiny perch or bullheads to avoid a blank. The team plan was to go for the bream on a slider at 45-50m, which was about half way across. We used 12-15g sliders and fished them as much as 18" overdepth with a size 16 B560. The venue was perfect for a slider, it hardly moved, there was very little wind and once the line was sunk you could put the rod in the rest without it moving, just as if you were feeder fishing.

The feeding plan was to put out as many as 40 balls of soil with a small amount of ground bait in it along with joker, bloodworm, caster, dead maggot and chopped worm. These balls went in rock hard and put in as small an area as possible. The bream seemed to respond to the noise and if there was any in the area the first hour was good, we were only fishing for a few bream, but I felt there was a chance of catching one on any peg and the first hour was your best chance.

On day One, as a team, we caught most of our bream early in the match and very little late, but the runners noticed that the teams who were catching bream late were feeding soft balls of ground bait, the cloud seemed to be attracting them towards the bait on the bottom, so on the second day we amended the feeding plan, and it worked superb.

On day one I drew C8, this is an area we had practiced earlier in the week and caught bream, so I was confident, I caught 3 bream in total for a weight just under 4kg and finished 6th in my section of 24. The french angler, who was 6 pegs to my left, caught 4 bream in the last 2 hours, to win the section with 8kgs+, he had topped up with soft balls.

Day 2, I drew B18, an area that some bream were caught on day 1, so I was happy. The feeding plan had definitely worked better than day one, I caught 3 bream for a weight of 5kgs+ and finished third in my section, we then had a frantic 20 minutes trying to work out every teams points to see if we had done enough to win, we had, but only just, beating the Russians by just one point, I was over the moon, and my first gold medal with the mens team.

My 6 points on day one and 3 points on day two, gave me 11th individual.
It has all the features of the Delkim Txi Plus bite alarm, but without the remote system.

Delkim EV is a highly reliable and yet very affordable bite alarm, the build quality and the technology is the same as the famous Delkim Txi.

The EV plus is an alarm used by serious anglers, it can upgraded to a remote system by using the Tx plus micro Transmitter and the Rx Plus Pro Mini receiver, this allows the user to upgrade to a cordless system at a later date, without having to sell the alarms and buy the Delkim Txi system.

By upgrading this way, you get a good range yet still retain the long battery life.

Delkim use a vibration sensing system for indicating line movement, it has a microprocessor and piezo technology, this gives indication of speed and vibration, without the need for moving parts.

The sensitivity range is large so you can make fine adjustments to cope with a broad range of conditions, from calm days to gale force winds, even strong flow on a river.

The volume control can be adjusted from silent to 100dB, this loud enough to wake you when you are asleep, a sounder box is an option but not essential.

A wide tone range, from high to low, allows you to set each alarm at different tones so that you can identify which rod is 'going off' at any time.

The alarms has 3 large rotary control buttons, the large size is great when your hands are cold, the buttons are for Sensitivity, Volume and Tone.

Each alarm has 2 super bright, highly visible flashing and latching LEDs, which are available in red, blue, white, green, yellow and purple.

To switch the alarm on or off there is a push button, which is colour coded to match the Led.

Delkim have patented a unique night marking system, which glimmer continuously so that you can find the alarms in the dark, eliminating the need for betalights, you cannot switch this facility off.

Each alarm has two output sockets, a 2.5mm outlet for use with a Delkim Nitelite Pro illuminating hanger and a 3.5mm outlet for the connection of a Tx Plus Micro Transmitter if you wish to use a remote system.

Just got back from the 2014 sensas festival fished in the chateadunn region of france. One day fished on the river loir and one day fished on a complex of lakes nearby. I travelled over on the thursday for two days practise and a good look at all the venues.

I fished the river on the thursday, i had a really nice day i caught 20lb all of skimmers and one bream. Friday i went on the harder of the three lakes, i caught plenty of small catfish, my travelling partner Des ship caught a couple of big bream that day which told us that there was big fish to target as well.

Day one of the competition i drew the river, four pegs to the left of where i practised, so i had a good idea of how to fish. I had some very good anglers in my section including lee kerry, sean ashby and two french internationals so i knew i was going to be in for a tough day. It fished a lot harder in the match then in practise as expected, i ended catch a dozen small skimmers and a few dumpy roach on a long pole pole with bloodworm, i weighed 2kilo 260gram, which was good enough for third. The section was very close 6 anglers were separated by 400 grams. I was very happy with third because it gave me all to fish for the second day.

Day 2, i drew the second lake of the three half way along the road side bank, i did fancy my draw because a lot of the french anglers were saying it was a good area.

I had a awesome days fishing, virtually a bite a chuck for 5 hours, all small skimmers with one bonus kilo bream. I weighed 7kilo 800 which won me the section.

Top rod on the night was Jason Bird with 10lb 3oz, he included a big bream amongst his roach catch, all on the pole with maggots. Second was John Macey with 8lb 11oz of skimmers and roach all caught on the pole, maggot being the bait.

Andy Curry was third with 8lb of skimmers and roach, from peg 6 and Dave Clutterbuck was fourth with 7lb 3oz of roach and ruffe from end peg 1.

Pete Sivell was fifth with 6lb 5oz of roach and perch, all on the pole with maggot and Pete Ellis had 6lb of roach and perch for sixth overall.
These fish are in pristine condition with bright red fins and a lovely blue tinge. These big roach are hardly ever caught and I am sure some of these fish live their whole lives without ever getting caught in such a big expanse of water.

Top rod on the night was Pete Sivell with 13lb 9oz of skimmers and roach, caught on the pole with maggot, second was John Macey with 10lb 13oz from the next peg and a similar catch.

Andy Curry was third with 10lb 12oz, his best roach was 1.5lb, he also had some perch in his catch. Dave Clutterbuck was fourth with alb 8oz of roach and dace, all caught on the pole with caster.

Pete Ellis was fifth with 9lb 2oz and Jason Bird had 7lb 1oz for sixth.

Thursday evening match was won by John Macey with 11lb 2oz, the best weight for a long time. John caught skimmers and roach on the pole with maggot. Pete Ellis was second with 7lb 13oz of skimmers on the ground bait feeder.

Jason Bird was third with 6lb 5oz of skimmers on the pole and Dave Clutterbuck was fourth with 5lb 7oz of roach and dace on the pole. Andy Curry was fifth with 4lb 15oz and Pete Sivell was sixth with 3lb.

Throughout this period of heavy rain the docks has continued to fish well in area, its best to fish where other anglers have fished as the fish get used to regular bait going in and they hang around these areas, so if you fancy a days free fishing give the shop a ring and we will put you on the best areas.
Second was Darren Bickerton on High Pool 4, with 12lb 14oz, a mixed bag of roach, skimmers, perch and a tench. Third was Steve Tucker with 11lb 1oz which included some F1s. Ricky Teale was fourth with 10lb 4oz.
For company at the next peg, I had Tony Rixon, I rate Tony as probably the best angler around here on the 'local circuit' and he had just won the Viaduct Silverfish Series without dropping a point, so I was expecting a real 'tussle'.

I started my match by feeding 8 balls of 'Thatchers' with 250ml of casters in them at 14.5m, split between 2 lines at 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock, this was for skimmers which you need to win. I then loose fed and started fishing at top 6 for roach and it didn't take long to start catching well, by constantly varying the depth as the fish moved up and down in the water I had a very good first couple of hours.

In that time I probably caught 15-17lb of roach, there was a lot of small ones, but in amongst them was a number of fish around the pound mark, then suddenly they were gone and I had to pick up the long pole and try for the skimmers. For the first hour it was a bit slow, then the swim came to life and I had a really good spell, catching 1lb+ skimmers, by regularly topping up with groundbait and caster I was able to keep the swim alive until the last 30 minutes when they moved off.

Tony had fished a similar match to me, but with a bush in-between us I wasn't sure just how much he had caught, so when the scales came along I was pleased to weigh 35lb to his 25lb, I must remember to collect my quid off him next time I see him, I finished second in the match, beaten by Ads Palmer who caught 39lb from peg 37, this has been the form peg recently. It is the nearest peg to where the water runs into the lake, the water temperature entering the lake is 9.5 degrees, while the rest of the lake is only 6 degrees.

Spring lake is awesome for silvers, you usually need skimmers to win the lake, although a lot of pegs are capable of producing 20lb+ nets of roach when the weather is right, they don't like bright days.
Viaduct is running a number of silver fish matches during the winter, every other wednesday, and I shall be fishing some of them.

After such a great days fishing I was really looking forward to Saturdays match, although I wanted to draw Spring lake again, so when I drew Campbell, which is as far away from Spring as you can get, I wasn't quite to keen.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I was at the wrong end of my section, I was the only person in the section not to get a bonus tench, bream or perch, and I weighed in 4lb 4oz for last in my section. I was not happy.

I have fished for Dorking for nearly ten years and in all that time this was the first time I have ever finished last in my section.
When the gates were closed, the water bounced off the lock gates and ran hard the other way, until eventually it settled down and everything was back to normal.

Top rod on the night was Dave Shore with a lovely net of skimmers which weighed 10lb 6oz, caught on the pole with maggot and ground bait. Dave Clutterbuck continued his good recent form and caught 5lb 4oz for second, this was roach and dace.

Pete Sivell and Jason Bird were joint third with 5lb 2oz, both caught caught roach and skimmers on the ground bait feeder. Andy Curry had 3lb 15oz for fifth place and Merv Sivell had 2lb 14oz from end peg 1.

Fifth was Pete Sivell with 2lb 4oz and John Macey was sixth with 1lb 10oz, all caught on an 11m pole with maggot.
The first round of this years league was met with the first heavy frost of the year, minus 3 at the draw, so a slow start was inevitable.

Barston fished extremely well, Packington wasn't as good as normal.
This is the same venue that was used for the 2011 World Championships, that match was dominated by the Italians, who were very secretive about how they fed there pegs, they prepared there bait behind umbrellas so nobody could see what they were doing. So when I had an invite from Maver Italy to fish the venue I jumped at the chance and hopefully I would catch a lot of fish and learn more about the best way to feed it.

The 2011 World Champs was brilliant fishing, with weights in excess of 20kgs, but lots of questions were asked about how the Italians had fed their bloodworm and joker. Long after the event I learnt that they had fed it in 'pongo', this is damp leam made to break down very slowly, something that the canals skimmers loved.

This Maver Day was in a format that I have never fished before, it is called 'Americano' style. Basically 2 anglers fish as a pair in one peg, their weights are added together and the prizes are paid out as tackle. Bloodworm and joker was banned, worms could only be used on the hook and not fed, and each pair of anglers had a 2 litre limit of caster and maggots. Now this may not be everyones idea of a fishing match, I can't see it catching on in the UK, but I was really looking forward to fishing the venue, trying out the new format, and meeting the Italian Maver team.

My partner for the match was young Bradley Gibbons, he's just joined Dorking and is a member of the England under 18 squad. The journey to Ostellato is 1000 miles and took us a full day to drive, we left early on Wednesday morning and arrived at Ostellato late that evening.

Thursday was our first days practice, the weather was 18 degrees and hardly a breath of wind, a bit different to back home, the fishing was excellent we fished for about 6 hours trying out different rigs and groundbaits, we used fishmeal and non fishmeal groundbaits, and I caught over 40lb of skimmers.

Friday, we started fishing and the weather was fine, then after an hour and a half the wind got up so bad we had to pack up, but I caught 20lb in that short time. This really is an awesome venue, I wish we had something like it in the UK.

Saturday was the day of the match, 150 pairs of anglers lined the banks, the match was split into 15 sections of 10 pairs. During the 10 minute prebaiting period we balled our groundbait and cupped our 'pongo'. If you watch the 'youtube' clip of the match you can see how close everyone is fishing together, my bait tray was touching Bradleys bait tray. The problem with fishing so close to one another is that only one angler really catches any fish on a venue that flows, the downstream angler.

We weighed in 10kgs+, in our section of 10, we had the end peg in the match, this peg won the match with 18kg+, our 10kgs was good enough for third overall, but with a continental payout only the section winners got a prize.

It was a great experience to fish the match, the venue has to be one of the best in the world, and it was great to meet the Maver Italian team.
WE HAVE A VACANY FOR THIS SERIES, one team has just dropped out, this leaves only 13 teams, it would be nice to get the numbers back up to 14, it makes the split sections a lot easier to work out.

Dates for the series

1st round, Saturday 23/11/13 Barston and Packington

There will be 3 sections at Barston and 2 sections on Mowlands, each team can nominate the anglers for each venue.

2nd round, Saturday 11/1/14 Viaduct.
There has been a Silverfish league running on there recently and 40lb of skimmers has been winning the matches with lots of 20lbs, lets hope the weather is kind and the venue fishes to its potential.
Sunday was the second round of the Aldershot Winter League at Gold Valley, Des and I travelled together, all the way up the M4 there was warning signs about the high winds and the chance of really bad weather, so the prospects of catching on a long pole or waggler looked very slim, we also had it in the back of our minds, would we get home ok??

Gold is the best venue in the world when you draw well, but not every peg is full of fish, so when Des drew 39 on Gold, next to the long island, and I drew 76 on middle we were both hopeful for a good days fishing. These two pegs are almost back to back, so we could have a bit of banter during the day.

My match started off a bit slow, after the first hour I hadn't caught and most of the anglers on my bank had at least one carp, I was just starting to think 'I must be doing something wrong' when the tip flew round and I was into my first carp of the day.

Des had a lot better start than I did, he caught 5 carp for nearly 40lb, in that time, he was fishing a method feeder up the side of the island and firing pellets over the top. The weather was still mild and the fish seem to be responding to bait being fired in, thats if you could you could avoid the seagulls.

The gulls at Gold have really got a taste for pellets and its amazing to see the speed that they drop from the sky to snatch a pellet before it sinks too deep, at times it was hard to get any pellets to the bottom before the gulls had them, I had to wait for someone else to feed, then when the gulls moved I could get some out, I couldn't feed as often as I would like.

After I had caught my first carp, I then got regular bites for the next couple of hours, fishing a straight lead with a 11mm pellet on the hook, Des was also catching and we both had a similar number of fish after 3 hours, regular feeding was the key, Will was on the opposite bank of Gold to Des, he had the wind off his back and was able to fish a pellet waggler and was catching well.

As the match progressed I was starting to feed my 5m line with meat and pellets and an edge line with ground bait, hoping for a good end to the match, edge fishing had been really good in some areas recently, with big fish making a huge difference.

The wind had formed a strong undertow on the lake and on my bank it was towing back against the wind, but it was so strong I couldn't get good presentation and never had a bite doing it, some of the anglers around me spent longer on it, but all they did was foul hook.

I had a free peg to my left, where I put my groundbait, in about 3ft of water, but this was facing the wind and the surface water was pushing the float back under the pole tip, not ideal but I managed to catch 4 carp in the last hour, then just before the hooter sounded, I hooked a big 'munter' down the edge, which took me out into the lake and I had to add the full 16m of pole to keep in touch and eventually it snapped 0.20mm hook length, I dont think it was foul hooked, but it may have been.

I finished with 17 carp for 102lb, and a section win, while Des had 17 carp for 127lb and third in the match. 128lb was second and 131lb won it, it was very close, there was also another 127lb for fourth.

The wind may have been very strong, but the carp loved it, and I cant remember a winter league at Gold wih so many 100lb+ weights, as Arnie says, 'I'll be back".

I have just got the latest carp pole from Maver, called Elite Carp 4, and this was the first time I had tried it and the few fish I caught on it, it felt perfect.

Only 3lb seperated the top 6.

Top rod on the night was Pete Ellis with 10lb 2oz of quality roach, using hemp and caster. Second was Andy Curry with 9lb 11oz, he included a 3lb mullet in his catch, the mullet took a caster and gave a brilliant scrap.

Third was match organiser Dave Clutterbuck, with 9lb 10oz all roach and John Macey had 8lb 5oz for fourth. Pete Sivell caught 7lb 6oz for fifth and Dave Shore also caught a 1.5lb mullet in his 7lb 3oz catch, which was sixth.

Baltic Wharf has been fishing brilliant for roach the last month, with catches up to 25lb, as long as the weather stays mild the roach sport should continue. When the weather does go cold all the fish seem to leave this area of the docks and move nearer the city centre.

The roach migrate to this area of the Great Ouse at this time of the year and we caught it just right.

I started my practice the weekend before, I made the 3 and half hour journey on the friday and decided to fish peg 10, not really knowing much about the pegs but it didnt seem to matter, roach were topping everywhere. The match was going to be pegged from permanent pegs 2 to 66 on Littleport AC waters. This length was used in the recent Div 2 national, it fished OK then but the roach werent there then.

This stretch is top 5 deep, so positive rigs and feeding was called for, I set up 2 and 3g rigs with size 18 hooks and 0.08 hook lengths, the ground bait mix needed to be sticky in that depth and the plan was to try and catch the fish on the bottom.

As far as I could tell nobody had fished this peg the day before, so I was expecting to have to wait for the fish to find the bait. Within 10 minutes of balling in I had my first bite, followed by a run of roach, this was a great start, in a 3 hour + session I caught approx 14lb of roach all on bloodworm or pinkies.

The next day I decided to fish a peg that had seen bait the day before, so I fished peg 4, Tim Nash had fished it and had caught well, same rigs and ground bait, and as soon as I dropped in after 'balling in' it was a bite a chuck, I caught 17lb of roach in just over 3 hours.

Thursday was the first official practice day on the match length, so the Dorking team had a line up between pegs 2-7. We all fished slightly different, and all caught loads of roach, Will had top weight with 24lb and I had 22lb, the lowest weight was 17lb, we were all 'buzzing' after such a great session.

That evening we had a really great team meeting, everybody discussing how they had fished and fed their peg and the outcome was a plan for some structured practice the next day.

The next day we fished pegs 38-43 and all had a plan to fish too, mine was to fish shorter than everyone else, 11.5m. We all fed to a strict plan and hopefully we could work out the best approach ready for the next day, the first match.

I caught from the off and managed 19lb, whilst Will was our top weight again with 27lb, the 11m line wasn't as good as 13m, so that was dismissed. That evening at the team meeting we came up with a plan for how we were going to feed it based on what we saw that day, arriving at a feeding strategy wasn't easy as we caught no matter how we fed it.

Saturday was the first match day, I drew peg 21, there was no bad pegs in this section, but I was disappointed to find out that is was one of the few pegs in the match length that hadn't been fished the day before, no bait had gone in, and practice had shown this to be a bad thing.

The team plan was to ball 6 litres of ground bait, containing 250ml joker, at the start and then cup 6 balls of double leam containing another 250ml of joker. This approach to feeding had always worked well for us on other waters containing roach. When the hooter went to start the match I dropped in and the usual instant bite never happened, after 10 mins I still hadn't had a bite and could see lots of roach being swung in at the other end of the section, I was starting to curse the fact that nobody had practiced on my peg the day before, eventually I got my first bite after 15 mins, a perch, not a good sign on a roach venue followed a few minutes later by my first roach.

After half an hour I had 2 fish in the net whilst other anglers in the section were on 20 or more, eventually my peg started to improve as the roach started to find my joker and after an hour I started to catch really well. The second hour I was really motoring as I caught a roach every chuck, as quick as I could get in then things gradually started to tail off until after 2 and a half hours all the roach bites stopped. The anglers around me all had the same problem, when my next 2 bites were perch, I feared the worst, one and a half hours to go I couldn't get a bite, the other end of the section were still catching, then I caught a 6oz skimmer followed by 3 more in quick succession, between then and the end of the match I caught 20 skimmers between 4 and 10 ounces, at the weigh in I weighed 19lb+ and I had not caught a single skimmers in 4 days practice.

I finished second in the section beaten by James Dent of Barnsley who had 22lb, how I cursed the slow start. On the day Barnsley won the team event with 5 out of 6 section wins, an awesome performance, they had it well sorted. We had 5 section seconds and barring a miracle on the sunday match we weren't going to be able to beat them.

The team meeting that evening was very interesting, its not often we get beat like that, we had spotted a few things that Barnsley had done on the day, so we tweeked our plans for the next day. That evening Steve Sanders made a 4 hour round trip to Birmingham to pick up some fresh bloodworm and got back to the hotel at 1 in the morning, a true legend.

The next day, I had a lovely days fishing, I caught 17lb of roach to win my section and the team got closer to Barnsley, they only beat us by 2 points on the day, but they had done the damage on day one, so Congratulations to them and to the Angling Trust for picking what has got to be the best natural venue in the country.

I wish we had a venue like this near to Bristol, as I would be fishing it all the time, looks like I am going to have to make the long trip up to Thorne to find fishing like this, the Stainforth and Keadby is the nearest venue I know of and this is where the Barnsley lads would have learnt these skills that they used.

I finished the weekend with a first and a second in the section, caught a load of fish, that put me fifth individual over the weekend and top in the Dorking team, so a great weekend that I really enjoyed, next weekend is the Maver festival at Whiteacres, bring it on!

Last week I went to Poland as part of the squad for the 60th World Angling Championships, and it was one of the best weeks of my life.

It was fished on the Keranski Channel, near Warsaw. the team arrived 2 weeks before the match and practiced off the match length, I joined them a week before the match, by which time they already had a good 'feel' about the place.

The Keranski Channel is about 18km long and about 30-40m wide. It is fed by a large lake at one end and runs into a large river in the centre of Warsaw.

The Channel holds a large variety of species, with roach, skimmers, hybrids, bleak and perch being the main species. The downstream A section held more skimmers than the other 4 sections, and in practice weights up to 9kg could be caught, where as 5-6kgs was very good in the other sections.

Sections B to E were in a continuous straight line, whilst A section was on its own and had a stream running in just upstream of it, this stream kept some colour in the water, which the skimmers liked. The rest of the match length was clear and the water looked very dark.

All the info we could find out about the venue before we arrived was that was going to be a bleak and skimmers match, but during practice we quickly realised that there was a lot of roach in the channel and that they would be important.

The weather was typical of northern europe for this time of the year, showers, overcast, yet still mild, and as long as it never went sunny we could rule out the bleak, bleak really do like the sun on the water and there are a lot of teams better than us at catching bleak, so we prayed for cloud cover every day.

Sections B to E was where the the team result would be decided, A section was difficult as you would need skimmers to win it, yet they weren't in every peg. So all our focus was around coming up with a plan for B to E sections.

During practice we quickly realised the channel was responding as a small canal, back home, with roach the main target species. By feeding a number of lines with joker and rotating them we were able to keep the bites coming for most of the match.

Instead of balling in on the 13m line, this has become standard practice for most of the teams, we cupped all our bait, usually spread over 4 different lines, a typical swim would be 4m for perch and the odd roach, the majority of the bait was spread over 6m, 11m and 13m. By swapping between these lines and topping up when you rested a line we were able to keep putting fish in the net all day.

The channel was only about 6-7ft deep and 0.5g rigs were perfect. One of the key things we discovered in practice was that 2 jokers on the hook was by far the best hook bait, far better than bloodworm, and we cupped all our bait in soil.

This channel responded like an english canal, the standard continental approach of 'balling it' on 2 lines was nowhere near as good. The day 1 result was probably the best the England team has ever had, 4 section wins and a third, giving 7 penalty points. going into day 2 we were very confident we had everything right, as long as the weather never changed, over the years we have seen the weather spoil the best laid plans.

Luckily for us, the channel fished exactly the same on the sunday, and we had 2 wins, 2 seconds and a nine points in the dodgy A section. This was our best victory for a few years and one I was very proud to be part of, even though I ran the bank, it was great experience for me, and I am sure more teams will now experiment with this style of feeding instead of just 'balling it' everywhere they go.
Happy Days, again!

Last Saturdays Division 1 National was a grueller for most people, if you never drew an end peg or a feature peg, a kilo was a massive weight.

My Dorking team mates put in less effort than we usually do, we found it hard to get excited about the venue, our total team practice consisted of 5 of us spending one day on the last weekend of practice, I managed to win the Sunday match with 7lb 1oz of dumpy roach on squatts, a lovely days fishing.

Despite this lack of practice, we felt that we had drawn up a good plan from what we had seen that weekend. the basic plan for most pegs was to start on bread short, feed some red worms in terre de river somewhere in the peg and cup in 8 big balls of ground bait in 2ft of water across and then spray squats over the top.

My match started off quite well, I caught 6 quick roach on the bread, followed by 6 small perch on the red worms before I went over the far side on squats. I could only get an odd bite over the ground bait from small roach and perch, but at least it was bites. After an hour I couldn't get a bite anywhere else in the peg except over the far side, by constantly lifting and dropping the rig I was able to get the odd small fish, while the people around me struggled to catch anything.

I drew K section, it was a very nice looking section, with easy access and comfortable pegs, not too many people walking along the tow path and not one piece of dogs c**p, I'm sure it would have fished a lot better had there not been so many matches in the run up to the event. The draw was at St Georges Park, training ground for the England football team, its an amazing place, but there was only 3 toilets between 600+ people, now I know what its like when my misses complains about queuing for the loo.

I was able to get the odd bite for most of the match, except the last 45 mins, and weighed in 920g, which put me 5th out of the 28 anglers on my scales. I was the lowest weight in the team, everyone else caught over a kilo, this gave us 416 points for the bronze medal, a result we were happy with considering we had 3 anglers on International duty and the amount of effort we put in.
